EVENT: Poetry Slam 2009!

It’s our sixth annual Poetry Slam!

Come support the arts or just for awesome music and poetry at Bay Street Coffee, on 12/19 (that’s a Saturday!) from 6-9PM.

Tickets are only $5 - we’ll be selling in the bell tower quad and at the event itself, but it’s best to get your ticket beforehand. (: Also, all performers get a 40% discount on their tickets!

In short: Be there or be square. :]

When: Saturday, November 21. 4-7 PM
Where: Mission Coffee (151 Washington Blvd.)
Cost: None (Optional: money for food)

Event Details:

Socialize with your fellow writers/Phoenicians! For NaNoWriMo participants, try and crank out 10k! Or if you’re not participating in NaNo, just come to support us! And have awesome coffee and snacks. :]

EVENT: Editor Announcements

In addition to editor announcements, we’ll also be discussing super important and exciting upcoming Phoenician events, like our legendary Poetry Slam as well as a NaNoWriMo Write-In (for all you fellow WriMos), plus other amazing things.

Hey, Phoenicians! We’re wondering how many of you are participating/interested in participating in National Novel Writing Month this year.

It’s totally crazy (50,000 words in 30 days!) and totally fun (yay, caffeine!) and totally worth it. :)

Anyway, if we get enough participation, we’re thinking about hosting write-ins in which we basically gather every week and clack furiously away on our laptops and provide moral support for each other. We’re thinking about having them at Mission Coffee, but if you have a better suggestion, feel free to say so!

We’ll be watching Amélie, which is rated R but is a fabulous movie. :) The movie lasts a little over two hours, but we will also be playing FUN, ice-breaking, totally non-awkward games.

Due to the postponement of homecoming week, we’ll have to push back interviews and such, as well.

Our fabulous bonding event, though, is still happening, so be on the lookout for our e-mail regarding that.

Phoenix 10/8 Meeting Recap

Hey! Today was our second meeting of the year (: For those of you who couldn’t make it, here’s what we did:

1) Collected editor applications — email supplements to phoenixmsj@gmail.com! Also, if you couldn’t turn in your application today, you can still email it in until 11:59 of today (10/8).

2) Collected membership fees ($3) — you can continue to turn in membership fees to officers, at your interview (if you’re applying to be an editor), at our bonding session (on 10/24, more info below), or at our next meeting (most likely 11/5, stay tuned).

3) Interview times will most likely be the week after Homecoming (the week of 10/19), and it will extend to the next week if necessary. We’ll send out an email soon with the interview times, so keep checking your email. Editorship decisions will most likely be announced at our next meeting on Nov. 5, but once again, keep checking your email for more information.

4) Discussed our bonding session! Here’s what you need to know:
- Saturday 10/24 at Sarah’s house — we’ll email out information later
- 4 to 7 pm
- we’ll be watching Amelie! (NOTE: this movie is R-rated, so please make sure your parents are ok with it before you come)
- it’s a potluck, so please bring some food (the officers will have some prepared, of course)
- if you are a member, this is a nice bonding session to get to know everyone; if you are aspiring to be an editor, this is the perfect chance to let the officers see you in an informal setting; but most importantly, we hope everyone has fun (:

Event Details: We’re going to talk and have fun. You can turn in your editor apps or just become a member (for only $3!).

Even if you don’t want to pay the fee just yet, you can let us know you want to be a member. But do note that you’ll miss out on all the awesome perks of being a member if you don’t pay. :/

Copy Editor Supplement

If you wish to apply for a copy editor position, edit the following passage as you see fit and attach it to your application:

fitzgerald’s america is plagued by, the issues of class social standing and the supposed superiority of inherited wealth to wealth newly made. Even when Gatsby is able to as the the American Dream promises, make an life for hiself despite the background of his ancestors; the gap in social Standing: between Daisy and him make a union of the Two imposible gatsby’s failure, then, reflects a greater failure as well. The failure of America to fulfill its promise to the selfmade man. The country was so settled now, so content, with the way things are, that the rise of individuals who advance by they’re own work and sweat is a cause for fear, and distrust, not admiration. A perfect example of seen in Fitzgerald’s West and East Egg witch stand for split between new and old wealth. The scorn of East Egg is the hurdle too Daisy that Gatsby canot overcome Daisy after all as part of East Egg as well. The fear of the new; also extends to her. “She was appalled by West Egg, this unprecedented ‘place’ that Broadway had begotten upon the Long Island fishing village- appalled by its raw vigor that chafed under the old euphemisms… she saw something awful in the very simplicity she failed to understand.” But East Egg is more- than just a location; it is a attitude that extends in to the america beyond fitzgerald’s imagination. Once, the absence of that attitude was what made America unique; what made those dutch sailers set out for what was truly A new world. The continents was empty then free of the old families of Europe with they’re strangleholds on wealth America was an promise- anyone with they will and the strength too work could prosper. But in time, wealth began again to Accumulate around a few in Gatsby’s world, the people of East Egg. It spells doom for both Gatsbys dream and the american Dream.
